Handlebars
cycling gym & health bar
For the half page magazine ad, I thought of Handlebars's rivalries when it comes to who has the best cycling gym. I remember Ms. DePace mentioned MK Lab, which is another cycling gym in Naperville. However, it combines the cycling classes with Pilates to create a full on gym effect. Customers who solemnly want a cycling gym in Naperville should look no further than Handlebars. I compared the two gyms (which pretty much look exactly the same) by saying what each company wants for their customers. Since MK Lab is using more than one activity for its promotion, all they really want is your time at their gym and your money for profit. However, at Handlebars, they really want a person to achieve their goals and be happy with the way their body looks. Yes, money is still a factor since it is a business, but it has never been their main reason for starting their gym. Included is the business ID with address and logo to let viewers know what the ad is trying to get across. The color scheme and wood accent is true to the company's purpose --- living life in peace.

Unfortunately, there was no time to film the commercial that would've gone with this storyboard. However, it is clear that the storyboard is true to the purpose of the company. Handlebars is displayed as an understanding and forgiving place, and most definitely not a place one should feel self conscious or scared. The man is clearly nervous about confronting the instructor, but she has no reason to be mad since she is happy he showed up to help himself. Remember, the slogan is "It's up to you, to help you." and the workers (Katlyn and Kevin) stay true to the meaning of that quote.
Since this ad is being directly mailed to returning customers, it should give some sort of benefit for coming their first time. $10 off is reasonable and doesn't throw off the balance between profit and generosity. The images are included to remind the returning customer of what they experienced when they took the class and urge them to come back. The logo and slogan are clearly seen in the top portion of the ad, and the slogan is included at the end of the message to the customer. It has many claims in the message, including the You approach, to encourage the customer to return to the studio.
In the billboard ad, I used the bicycle format straight from the website and erased the different parts used in the bike and replaced it with parts of the body that cycling can benefit. This can be effective when possible customers wonder, "How can cycling benefit me?" and will see that cycling has a positive effect on the whole body, not just your legs. The logo is clearly seen in the bottom right hand corner which gives the ad some business ID. The slogan works along with the "Bike of Health" since it's talking about how cycling can help you and your body if you choose to work it. The bike was added in the right of the image to make the scene look like more of a biking area to go along with the billboard in the back. The color scheme is kept in the billboard and clearly speaks "It's up to you, to help you".
For the social media effort, I thought how Ms. DePace wanted more teenagers coming to the classes. All of the teens I know have Snapchat and are obsessed with it. So, I decided to create a Snapchat filter for teenagers to recognize that the gym is in the area and is welcoming to people of all ages. It briefly gives a description of what Handlebars is and includes the logo to be recognized in the window if passing by the building. It's easy to add them, and get daily updates using the Story feature in the app. They can give private tours and introduce exclusive offers as well! It will be effective with the teen age since most are obsessed with the app and can easily be recognized using the filter.
